This week our product design class learned about the art of creativity in our brand new city campus that we are lucky enough to be the ones to use it first and have a new homebase for our projects . this new campus can help our mindsets and ideation with completely new surroundings to immerse ourselves in while using our design ideologies.
In the class we did a complete breakdown of the brain of a designer and how we think and respond to problems and solutions. We analyzed the creative aspects of ourselves as designers by looking at which side of our brain do we use and how we act upon a task. This was all new information to me as it was something i never really thought about or ever learned about in my life. it helped me really reflect on myself and realise how i work and how i go through my own design process..
We started off with a video to get our perspectives in working order. 'The Power of Ten' video by Charles and Ray Eames was played, and if you haven't seen it, i would highly recommend for a new insight on the world. The video consists of a camera shot constantly zooming out at the power of 10 every couple seconds and we watched as the world disappeared and all of a sudden the universe itself. Then in reverse it zoomed in to a point where it was at the point of an atom. It was a very surrealistic video but it really makes you think about your perspective and the way you view the world in general. Truly a fascinating brain tickler of a video.
Our first outdoor activity 'Life under a microscope' was our outdoor adventure for the day. We walked around the streets of Limerick with nothing but a piece of A4 paper with a two inch square cut out. We used this cutout as a camera lens to see the world from a different viewpoint. The photos i took were really interesting as it really had me analyze the focal point more and break it down in my mind.
The next activity was probably my favorite activity of all time, 'designing stupid shit that no-one needs'. We split into groups and had to brainstorm ideas of the most useless and unusable products you could put onto the market. It was a fun and completely new experience going against every design rule in the book but it was the most enjoyable and unique experience. From a sponge spatula, to a fork with spring prongs, the ideas were as original yet amusing as they could get. To yet another great week of designing.
